The Gulmohur tree and Rafey

"Where is Rafey?” enquired Mrs.Sheela Ahuja. Raji candidly replied that she knew where he’d be, but she wouldn’t tell, for reasons unknown. Annoyed and thoroughly disgusted Mrs.Ahuja scolded her daughter and asked where Rafey had been since morning, for she wanted her grocery in place and the fellow was least bothered about the daily chores. Raji played the confidante’s part and refused to reveal the whereabouts of Rafey.

Rafey and Raji were born on the same day. They shared the same initials, same birth place, and same maternity home, but different destinies. Rafey was Shareeq’s son. Shareeq was the driver and housekeeper to the Ahuja family.
They say, fate rules the life. Rafey was born with a luck which caused a death and misfortune to his family. His father remained a widower, after his mother took the abode’s path after Rafey was born. Rafey was devoid of a mother’s love all his life. For 5 years he basked in the glory of his father, until disaster struck again and he was left all alone to write his destiny, and live his share of goodness and ill-luck.

“Raji, for God’s sake, tell me where the hell is Rafey? I will be late for office and you will have to take care of the grocery” yelled Mrs. Ahuja.
Silence reigned and Raji went on with her painting assignment ignoring the questions her mother was throwing at her.

The Gulmohur shades were a mere illusion. Rafey sat under the huge tree staring at the sky, facing west. The sun was yet to change its course, and it shone brightly on Rafey’s back. He felt the heat; he loved taking it all on him. He observed the traffic across the road. The park had only one big tree and this Gulmohur was his best friend, for his father used to make him sit on the biggest branch of this tree while he washed the cars at the garage. He recollected each and every move of his father, the way he toiled hard to clean the wheels, intricately, making the steel shine. He felt proud of his perfection. Rafey was not sure whether his father’s departure was permanent or temporary. Every time he thought of his father, he smiled, thinking about the good times that will follow once he came back, from where he had gone.

It was a Friday. After offering namaz at the mosque, Shareeq was returning back home, when a truck hit him. There was a delay in rushing him to hospital because of the apparent apprehension of the people. Shareeq was a Muslim, there could have been many consequences of offering help to him. Humanity had diminished somewhere. It meant nothing to many people, but for Rafey, it was the end of parental bliss and he was left an orphan.

The amber coloured flowers on the gulmohur tree fell down on Rafey’s feet. The hot wind shook the branches of the tree and caressed his hair. It was just another day when he wanted to fight the world and do what he always wanted to do. The only person who understood his predicament was Raji. They were best of friends and shared everything. The 6 years of their lives, they had no one else, but each other. A sincere love, affection ruled the little hearts and they knew there was nothing beyond a relation of heart with heart. For them there was no religion, there was no caste, there were no differences.
That day Rafey sat under his favourite tree which was named after his mother “Gul”, and his thoughts encompassed all that was around him , he lived an eternity, missing what he didn’t have and appreciating what he had –nothing!!

JAB WE MET

Ten thousand years and more wouldn’t have been enough to cherish the affection of this friendship that we share. It was a summer morning when we all gathered to write our destinies, paint the canvases of life with our dreams, travel on the paths towards our aims and find a meaning our existences. Yes, it was our first job, first exposure to the industry and first encounter!

To one single emotion, there were so many faces reacting differently. It was fear, excitement and euphoria, all in one! We saw it through together. We faced the tough times, helping each other come out of the obscurity. We cherished the coffee breaks, where we discussed our experiences, deeds, their repercussions, we had witty repartees and we grew together, into men and women our parents would have loved to see.

Away from home, we became home to each other. Every time I missed my parents, I had someone to hug, someone to console me, every time I missed my best friend, I had some one to confide in, every time I needed support I had father’s shoulder. For all the times when we felt like behaving childish, we had a company to act foolish. The pranks, stupid talks, fights, all made us mature into thick friends. They say it is very difficult to make friends after you pass out from high school. It is entirely wrong, for I have known what friendship is, only after meeting some people!! I have not one person to talk about, but an entire gang, I call CB2. The number doesn’t matter, the friendship does.

To: Varghese, Vivek, Rahul,Jincy,Rohitx3,Deborshi,Priyanka,Amit,Malathi,Harshad,Damini,Rajesh,Tresa –Cheers!! :)

this one is for you .... my dedication!!

Let the friendship's day fever begin!!!

F.R.I.E.N.D.S theme song

So, no one told you life was going to be this way.
Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A.
It's like you're always stuck in second gear.
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month,
or even your year.
But....

I'll be there for you
When the rain starts to pour
I'll be there for you
Like I've been there before
I'll be there for you
'Cause you're there for me too

You're still in bed at ten and work began at eight.
You've burned your breakfast, so far, things are going great.
Your mother warned you there'd be days like these.
But she didn't tell you when the world
has brought you down to your knees,
that,

I'll be there for you
When the rain starts to pour
I'll be there for you
Like I've been there before
I'll be there for you
'Cause you're there for me too

No one could ever know me, no one could ever see me.
Seems you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me.
Someone to face the day with, make it through the rest with,
someone I'll always laugh with.
Even at my worst, I'm best with you. Yeah!

It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month,
or even your year

I'll be there for you
When the rain starts to pour
I'll be there for you
Like I've been there before
I'll be there for you
'Cause you're there for me too

I'll be there for you
I'll be there for you
I'll be there for you
'Cause you're there for me too

KISS

The messenger window pops in:

VK: Solve this!!
VK: a^b+b^a=768 find a,b?
VK: In one minute!!

I grab a paper and a pen and start analyzing the equation. It has been ages since I sat with any such math problem. But I think I should be able to crack this one… I take log on both sides….
Log(a^b+b^a) =Log 768 (log 768!! ??? WTF )

I think of not using the scientific calculator… How do I go on? Wait… I can’t take a log of (a^b+b^a).. There is a plus sign!!!
Phew!! I feel like hitting my head on the wall!!
And as I think about the extent of complexity I have reached, I realize the minute is already over, and my quest for the answer reaches the zenith.
I ponder over it…and during the process I find myself in a different terrain..
I am reliving a conversation:

Nonsense: “I have my own conceptions about life. There are 3 different kinds of emotions which I think can make a……”

Sense: “Why don’t u tell me what u are feeling, in one simple statement!!

Nonsense: “That is what I am trying to tell you. I think it is very necessary to have control over your heart, coz all the wrong you do is only because of instant emotional breakdowns and sentimental termination of desires. The mind keeps you going on the right track. Apparently, there is no suffering, if u subdue your hearts requests…, I hope you get what I say!!

Sense: “No, I don’t get any of what you say.. Why do you think so much!! Keep it simple!!

Nonsense: “No it isn’t simple… you are trying to find a way out , without facing the complexity. You should realize that reality is harsh.

Sense: Reality is Virtual. You can have your own interpretations.
And for all the interpretations you make, I tell you –KISS “Keep It Simple Stupid!!!”

I find myself staring the problem again. I ping Varghese back…ask him for the answer!! And he insults saying… “mujhe to laga ki tu ye solve kar degi”… :(

I beg for the answer… the emotional turmoil and the frustration of not getting the answer correct is mounting up big time…

Answer please, I insist….

And the msngr window says:

VK: gadhi
VK: the answer is 1 and 767

How simple that was…. My approach was complex!!! I need to think about the way I handle things.
And this is what I am telling myself from the time I had a revelation: KISS KISS KISS…. Keep It Simple Stupid!!! :P

Friends!!??? , Not us!!

“Hi! Anuj”, Rishi called out. “You know, we have a new classmate, and she is…” Went on Rishi. “ Tell me something new, buddy, we just had an introduction”, said Anuj with an air. This made Rishi feel jealous. “Don’t cry, chum, better luck next time”, teased Anuj. “Please!! You think, you can make me cry?? You have weird notions!!” replied Rishi. This was the umpteenth time both of them fell for the same girl. Whenever there was a new entry in a class, both used to vie for having an introduction first. They had competition for almost everything obtainable. The two had a great sagacity and a good sense of humor; both were geniuses and were very ambitious. Both had diverse aims though. Anuj dreamt of joining the army and Rishi had a goal of joining the NASA.
All through their college life they stayed together, enjoying life, hanging out with their group and flirting around. They were the cool dudes of their time. They liked compliments and loved to hear praises. Just one thing reckoned their nerves. The two of them hated to be called “good friends”. They always insisted that they weren’t friends and were mere classmates. Ironically they explained that they were together just to have a sense of the “gennext” challenge. Friendship seemed to have no subsistence in their dictionary.
Many times, the two consoled each other for their failures, shared dreams and guided each other through harsh times; but they never called themselves friends. Committing to friendship, according to them, made them poignant. They were the practical, no-nonsense chaps and never regarded emotions. These made them conceal their feelings in public. Pragmatism reigned and they never expressed what they felt.
With the passage of time, they went on to pursue their dreams. Anuj had to deal with a strong opposition from his family. They forbade him to join the army and insisted on joining some lucrative office job. Anuj found it hard to accept that his dreams and desires were shattered. He was left with no support. His dire attitude towards people left him alone. His heart ached for a friend. He missed Rishi awfully. He remembered all the good times when they shared their ideas, supported each other and enjoyed life facing each day with a new zeal. He recollected the old days when they dreamt of accomplishing the challenges. He strongly wished to have Rishi back. Rishi, on the other hand grieved for having Anuj. The competition seemed tough and that made him realize the importance of a friend. It was late. They hadn’t expressed what they felt. Absence of a friend made their hearts grow fonder.
On fine day, in the summers of the New York City, the two met again. The longing hearts finally found solace. They were face to face with each other. The blunt guys had a few tears in eyes, their hearts called out for a hug. But their practicality stopped them from being humble.
“Rishi, I can see tears in your eyes” said Anuj. “ Hmmm… You are the only one, man, who can ever make me cry, and you made me…” Both hugged each other. The friendship, which had no clarity finally got the due name and respect. They were not together in hard-hitting times, but they decided to be there for each other in times of joy and sorrow. The unexpressed feelings, the silent sighs, the dead words, suddenly came to life and they promised to be together through thick and thin. They said nothing. They did nothing. But all was confessed with twinkling tears in eyes. They both headed towards the cafĂ©. They wanted to celebrate the old friendship, which had acquired a new definition.
Their eyes scrutinized the environment, as they felt each other’s presence. Anuj looked at Rishi with an astonished gaze; Rishi gave back the same look. Smiles cropped up. The naughty looks in the eyes came back to life. “Let’s go for it”, said Anuj. “Me first” said Rishi as he tucked his shirt in. Both had fallen for the same girl, one more time, and then they again contested for an introduction………
